In case it needs clarification, most enlisted people eat in a galley. Officers eat in the wardroom. Chiefs (senior enlisted people who dress like officers) eat in a Chief’s Mess.
Note that a steward is taking care of the captain’s dining needs. Those no longer exist. But Wardrooms and Chief’s Messes can’t go unstaffed (though no one is assigned to a ship to staff them), so enlisted personnel are pulled from their jobs (fixing airplanes and other frivolous things) to service those rooms. When I explained this idea of separate dining onboard ships with limited space and wasting personnel with professional job training to man them, an Army veteran friend was rather surprised and thought the concept asinine.
